To help you, we have a list of some common things you will need while traveling for a vacation. Ensure that you have all these things ready in advance, so your vacation will be a trouble-free and enjoyable one.
Travel checklist – things to take with you
1) Good quality travel bag/luggage
Traveling calls for taking your clothes and many other things. When you go on a vacation, you are likely to purchase things and bring them back with you. A good quality travel bag that has sufficient space for your belongings is essential. Luggage with wheels is ideal since it is convenient to use while traveling.
You may also require extra bags. A backpack is essential since you will leave your luggage in the hotel room. The backpack can be used to carry all that you need for the day’s travel. A duffel bag is another option to consider when you have a lot of luggage.
2) Clothing
It goes without saying that you need sufficient clothes for your trip. Choose the clothing depending on the destination and the weather. Some essentials you should not miss out on are:
- The clothes you like – shirts, pants, skirts, shorts, tank tops, swimsuits, etc. Choose dresses keeping in mind local cultural norms. You wouldn’t want to wear dresses that offend locals. Choose the dresses that are a comfortable fit.
- Sweaters or jackets are essential if you are going to a place with a cold climate.
- Shoes and socks. If you are hiking or camping, you need sturdy shoes.
- Belt (you can consider a belt with the option to keep money in it).
- Innerwear (have an extra set or two on hand).
- Sleepwear or pajamas.
- Hat or cap, sunglasses, and bandana or scarf.
- Rain jackets, compact umbrellas, and a windbreaker if you are traveling in the rainy season.
3) Essentials Kit
There are many essential items you need to take with you when you travel. It is important to take them along. Forgetting any of them can put you in trouble. You can have a separate bag for these items and keep it with you at all times. The things you need in the travel kit are:
- Mobile phone, which you would most probably carry on your person.
- Charger for the mobile.
- Passport and visa. Any other documents needed like ID card, frequent flyer card, health insurance documents, etc. can be carried with the passport. Ideally, you can carry them with you in your wallet or purse or in a separate folder.
- Tickets – air travel tickets and any other tickets.
- Sufficient cash. Apart from the cash in your wallet, you can also carry extra cash stored in a secure compartment in your luggage.
- Credit cards.
- Hand sanitizer and face mask.
- A printout containing contact details of family members, as well as emergency contacts (local police, local ambulance, local embassy, etc.).
- Hotel reservation documents (a print will be useful since it would have the hotel address and contact details).
- Maps and guide books (where needed).
- You can also consider carrying a flashlight or emergency light (depending on the place you visit).
4) Personal Kit
Your personal items, including your toiletries, can be in a separate kit. The kit can be as a bag or can be a part of your luggage. The personal kit would include the following:
- Laptop, tablet, or any other computing device with its charger. You may need a travel adapter, so you can connect your device to the plug easily.
- USB dongle to access the internet (as applicable).
- A power bank is useful if you are going to be on the move. It will help you ensure your mobile is charged.
- Keys (to your luggage, as well as house keys).
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss.
- Hairbrush, shampoo, and conditioner.
- Make-up kit.
- Deodorant and perfume.
- Sunscreen and lip balm (with SPF).
- Contact lenses with case and cleaning kit.
- Spectacles (with extra pair if needed).
- Personal hygiene products (including feminine hygiene products).
- Medication that you take regularly (take a prescription with you, so you can buy them if needed).
- Other medications like painkillers, throat lozenges, cough/cold medication, allergy medication, etc.) While taking medication, check local rules to find out if there are any restrictions.
- Insect repellent cream.
- A first aid kit with basics like bandages, gauze, etc.
Most of the toiletry items and medicines can be obtained in the place where you visit. Find out if they are available easily. If so, then avoid carrying them. Take only that which is absolutely essential.
5) Photography kit
Don’t forget your photography kit while traveling. You would want to capture memories of your wonderful holiday and the best way to do this is through a camera. While you can always use your mobile camera, you won’t get the best quality photos. If you want to take photos of the outdoor or of wildlife, a good camera is a must. Your photography kit can comprise the following:
- A good quality DSLR camera.
- Lenses of your choice.
- Spare batteries for the camera and/or charger.
- Memory cards.
- A bag or case to carry the camera and accessories.
- A tripod (preferable to get the best quality pics).
6) Other items
There are many other items you can take with you. They may not be essential, and you can take them if need be. Some other items to carry include:
- Books and magazines to read while traveling.
- A travel pillow, an eye mask, and ear plugs.
- A diary or travel journal with a pen.
- Board games or a pack of cards.
- Kindle device to read e-books.
- Earphones.
- Water bottle.
